Launch of The Japanese Technical Cooperation Project for "The Project on Gender Mainstreaming (Phase 2)"

Phnom Penh, May 10, 2010 - The Ministry of Women’s Affairs (MoWA) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will sign the Record of Discussion, which is an official agreement, between H.E. Dr. Ing Kantha Phavi, Minister, MoWA and Mr. Suzuki Yasujiro, Chief Representative, JICA Cambodia Office, for launching the Japanese Technical Cooperation Project, titled “Gender Mainstreaming Phase 2” on May 12, 2010 at 16:00 at MoWA (Minister’s office).

The project focuses on women’s economic empowerment, which is the priority strategy of MoWA in the five-year strategic plan 2009-2013, Neary Rattanak 3. The project aims at operationalizing an effective system for implementing women’s economic empowerment activities by five partner ministries, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), Ministry of Industry, Mine and Energy (MIME), Ministry of Commerce (MOC), Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training (MLVT) and Ministry of Rural Development (MRD), with coordination of MoWA and Ministry of Planning (MOP) through strengthening gender mainstreaming mechanism. It will implement pilot projects with line-departments in Kampong Cham Province and possibly other province(s) in the future. The duration of the project is five years.

The Ground Breaking Ceremony of Japanese Grant Aid Project "The Project for Construction of Marine Aquaculture Development Center in the Kingdom of Cambodia"

Phnom Penh, April 22, 2010 − The Royal Government of Cambodia and the Government of Japan will jointly organize the Ground Breaking Ceremony for the Project for Construction of Marine Aquaculture Development Center (MADeC) that will be held in April 26, 2010 at 08:30AM at the construction site in Muoy district, Preah Sihanouk municipality, Preah Sihanouk Province (known as Tomnub Rolok), presiding over by H.E. Por Try, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries and H.E. Hiroshi Kawamura, Minister of the Embassy of Japan.

The project is being implemented under the Japanese Grant Aid scheme in the amount of 624 Million Yen aiming at promoting the marine aquaculture development in order to: (1) respond to the increasing demand of farmers for domestic aquaculture finglings, and (2) reduce the pressure on the natural fishery resources and the impact of exotic infectious fish diseases. The project will provide facilities and equipments consisting of research and administration building, brood stock maturation building, hatchery and breeding building and aquaculture. The project also aims at developing the capacity of the center to produce 400,000 healthy seabass finglings for a year.

Japanese Grant Aid for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS) Program is to provide scholarship for young government officers, researchers, and business people from 10 countries to study at selected Japanese Universities to obtain master degree.

The objective of this program is to develop human resources that will be able to take the lead in key fields in the recipient country in the future.

In Cambodia, JDS program has been implemented since 2000 and more than 175 students are currently studying or already returned to Cambodia.
