About 30% of the global tuberculosis burden occur in the countries in the Western Pacific Region. Everyday one thousand people are said to die of tuberculosis within the Region. Tuberculosis deprives people of opportunities for income generation, thus aggravating poverty situations.

The Office for the Western Pacific Region of the World Health Organization (WHO/WPRO) organized a Technical Advisory Group Meeting on tuberculosis control in February 2002 in Osaka, Japan. Ranking officers from overseas discussed the issues and future directions for cooperation in tuberculosis control. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) launched a report on its policy and strategies on tuberculosis control on the occasion of the TAG Meeting.

JICA has worked in strengthening the tuberculosis control of developing countries for many years, making use of rich experiences of Japan in this field, and has played a vital role as a major donor agency. In the July 2000 G8 Okinawa Summit, tuberculosis was recognized as a very serious infectious disease, which needs to be tackled through international cooperation. Tuberculosis is an important issue in the context of poverty. JICA is committed to further increase its level of cooperation for tuberculosis control.
