Community-Based Approach for Nutrition Action (COBANA) in the Oromia Region Project

In response to frequent cases of malnutrition in Ethiopia, JICA has collaborated with the Oromia Regional Health Bureau (ORHB) to implement a technical cooperation project called Community-Based Approach for Nutrition Action (COBANA) in Oromia Region (COBANA). The 5-year project is currently in its final stage, as it started in 2008 and is scheduled to finish later on this year. The sole purpose of COBANA is to improve the nutrition problem in Ethiopia by working with target woredas (districts) to create sustainable responses and community-level prevention services to chronic malnutrition children under five and Pregnant and Lactating Women (PLW). This unique approach to health development allows communities in the target woredas of the Oromia region to facilitate and organize all project activities with the technical assistance of the Oromia Regional Government office. Community participation serves as the prevention mechanism in the target woredas against malnutrition.
