On October 4, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of the Republic of Niger inNiamey, to provide grant aid of up to 1.194 billion yen for a Project for Reinforcement of the Capacity of the National Office of Hydro-Agricultural Development for the Promotion of Irrigated Rice growing.
Under this project, agricultural equipment for developing and maintaining irrigation infrastructure will be procured with the aim of improving the living of farmers engaged in irrigation by expanding the quantity of agricultural products and hence the food security. It is expected that the area of irrigated land and the quantity of agricultural products such as rice will be increased and thus the standard of living of farmers including the food and nutritional situation will be improved.
