On December 23, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions with the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in Dhaka for the Project for Capacity Building of Nursing Services Phase 2.

As Bangladesh has been suffering from a shortage of health workers, especially nurses, the Government of Bangladesh has been working on improving both the quality and quantity of nurses. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced policies to increase the number of nurses in 2009 and introduced a four-year Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree.

JICA implemented a technical cooperation project called “Capacity Building of Nursing Services” during 2016-2021 in order to improve the quality of nursing education, especially through a four-year BSc degree. Implementation of nursing education for the BSc and nursing clinical practice for nursing students has been strengthened in the Dhaka Nursing College and the Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Under the COVID-19 pandemic, management training for infection prevention and medical necessities was provided. JICA has also offered assistance by an ODA loan project called “Maternal, Neonatal, and Child Health and Health System Improvement Project,” which has constructed facilities such as nursing college dormitories and provided clinical equipment.

The project aims to provide support for enhancing management capacity for nursing administration and strengthening the implementation of nursing education at the target public nursing colleges and hospitals. This contributes to the quality improvement of nursing education in Bangladesh and to the achievement of SDGs Goal 3.
