Dispatch of the Needs Assessment Survey Team to Moldova: to assess the needs for humanitarian and medical assistance for Ukrainian refugees

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) dispatches a needs assessment survey team for humanitarian and medical assistance to Republic of Moldova to extend assistance for Ukrainian refugees and the neighboring countries. The team of six members consists of medical personnel and JICA staff will leave Japan on March 19 and enter Moldova via Romania.

The team will utilize network that JICA has fostered through cooperation with Moldova on health and medical sectors. The team will work closely with the Moldovan Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO) to assess the needs in the health, medical and humanitarian assistance sectors for accepting the Ukrainian refugees. Furthermore, the team will capitalize its know-how accumulated from the past disaster relief activities to appropriately allocating medical resources that is best suited for the needs of the refugees and the hosting countries by cooperating with the WHO in arranging medical data management.

The number of refugees from Ukraine to Moldova has been increasing. Moldova is expected to require long-term assistance taking into account that a country of 2.64 million population hosts approximately 340,000 refugees (UNHCR, as of March 16) .

JICA’s cooperation to Moldova are mainly for health, medical and agricultural sectors. JICA will extend utmost cooperation to countries hosting Ukrainian refugees in cooperation with partners such as neighboring countries and international organizations.
