Signing of Record of Discussions on Technical Cooperation Project with Fiji: Improvement of water-supply efficiency through non-revenue water reduction

On February 22, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions with the Government of the Republic of Fiji for the Project for Capacity Development of Non-Revenue Water (※) Reduction in Nadi and Lautoka Area, a technical cooperation project.

The Nadi and Lautoka area is an important hub for the tourism, sugar, and manufacturing industries. With water demand in the area expected to grow as both the population and the number of tourists increase, there is a need for investment in the development of water sources and the maintenance of water facilities. However, a large-scale investment in such infrastructure is difficult for the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) to make due to the negative financial impact of COVID-19.

This project aims to reduce non-revenue water (NRW) in the Nadi and Lautoka area by improving WAF’s capacity for NRW reduction activities and raising awareness of water conservation among residents in the target area. By reducing NRW, the project is expected to improve water-supply efficiency and contribute to the achievement of SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Goal 6 (Clean water and sanitation).

※NRW: Water that has not been billed due to leakage from water pipes, illegal connections (stolen water), and water meter errors, etc.
