Since 1976 until 1990 JICA accepted 232 Liberian personnel to Japan or third countries to transfer knowledge and skills to them in various fields to contribute the development of Liberia.
Since 1979 JICA dispatched more than 170 young volunteers called Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer (JOCV) to all over Liberia as part of technical assistance in such field as science and math teaching, agriculture, auto maintenance and maternity health care.

Though bilateral assistance between Liberia and Japan was suspended, Japan has provided emergency assistance through multilateral assistance during the civil war. Since 1990 until 2006, Japan assisted about 5.5 billion US$ to Liberia via international organizations such as UN agencies, ICRC and so on.
