The likelihood of achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 rests on how innovative technologies could drive rapid changes and offer breakthroughs in tackling the development challenges. New technologies should be simple and low-cost to be adopted and deployed in low-income countries. The study is jointly conducted with the Brookings Institution and will focus on technologies that can be introduced soon and could be easily replicated across the world. The research will be published as a book entitled “Breakthrough: The Promise of Frontier Technologies for Sustainable Development” targeted at policymakers as well as wide range of readers who have interests in the achievement of the SDGs.

On December 9, the JICA Ogata Research Institute and the Center for Sustainable Development, Brookings Institution will launch the book on an online event. At this event, Co-editors Homi Kharas, Senior Fellow - Global Economy and Development, Center for Sustainable Development, Brookings Institution and Izumi Ohno, Senior Research Advisor, JICA Ogata Research Institute /Professor, National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) will provide an overview of the book. Then, a panel discussion with contributors follows, moderated by co-editor John McArthur, Director, Center for Sustainable Development, Brookings Institution.
