Continuum of Care for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health: Seventh Global Symposium on Health Systems Research 2022

On Oct. 31, 2022, Ghana Health Service policy leaders and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) officers jointly presented the findings of the Ensure Mothers and Babies Regular Access to Care (EMBRACE) Implementation Research in Ghana at the 7th Global Symposium on Health Systems Research. They discussed how these findings influenced the policy decisions on Ghana’s national maternal, newborn, and child health programs and exchanged various opinions, such as the importance of involving every stakeholder from the beginning and including the planning stage for strong partnership and participation.



-What is EMBRACE Implementation Research?
EMBRACE is an integrated package of interventions initiated by the Japanese government in 2012 to protect the lives and improve the health of mothers and children through the Continuum of Care (CoC) approach. The package also includes evidence-based policy making and support measures. In accordance with this initiative, the JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development (JICA Ogata Research Institute) conducted a research project titled “EMBRACE Implementation Research in Ghana” in collaboration with the University of Tokyo, the Ghana Health Service (GHS), and the JICA, to evaluate the impact of the EMBRACE intervention in three sites of the Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) in Ghana that were covered by different levels of healthcare services.
