Nurturing Future Research Scientists: KEMRI and JICA Launch New Technical Cooperation Project

June 7, 2022 marked yet another significant milestone in the long-standing cooperation and partnership between Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and JICA. The two organizations launched the new three - year technical cooperation project for strengthening research capacity at KEMRI.

At the kick-off meeting held at KEMRI headquarters, the Director-General, Prof. Sam Kariuki lauded JICA for the novel project initiative that will provide training for both scientific and non-scientific staff thereby building institutional capacity and adding value to skills and competencies for all staff within KEMRI.

On his part, Mr. Iwama Hajime, Chief Representative of JICA expressed his appreciation to KEMRI and its leadership for the role it played in the national response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Kenya. He pointed out that the kick-off of the new project would be a starting point in empowering KEMRI to continue playing a leading role in advancing research in global health and security. He emphasized that JICA would want to facilitate maximum interaction among all stakeholders, not only in Kenya but also in the other countries and forester exchange interaction between Kenya and a wide range of stakeholders in Japan such as research institutions, academia and the private sector. He noted the important role that KEMRI plays as a premier research institute in the East African region and reaffirmed JICA's commitment to ensure KEMRI's influence spans the entire African continent.
