Seminar on LGED-JICA Partnership for Rural Development in Bangladesh

JICA has been providing assistance to LGED (Local Government Engineering Division) through advisory and technical support since its inception in the 80's. As the prime organization for developing capacity of rural and urban local government institutions in terms of infrastructure development, LGED received JICA's support in important projects like Model Rural Development and RDEC (Rural Development Engineering Centre). In order to disseminate information and share experiences on JICA's long term support to LGED, JICA Alumni Association organized the above titled seminar.

The keynote paper for this seminar was presented by Mr. Wahidur Rahman, Superintendent Engineer, LGED. The paper explored Government of Bangladesh's rural development strategies and LGED's multidimensional activities in line with the strategies. The paper also explained in detail nature of JICA's support to LGED like training, expert services and technical cooperation projects. Minister for Science, Information and Communication Technology, Mr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, JICA Resident Representative Mr. Akio Arai, Former LGED Chief Engineer Mr. Quamrul Islam Siddique were present among other invitees and alumni members.

Seminar on Bird Flu

For the purpose of disseminating information on the harmful effects of Avian Influenza which is popularly known as Bird Flu, JICA Alumni Association conducted a seminar titled 'Avian Influenza (Bird Flu):Possible threats for Bangladesh' on July 28, 2006 at LGED auditorium. Mr. Kazi Abul Kashem, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture was the chief guest for the seminar. JICA Additional Resident Representative, Mr. Eiichiro Cho, was the special guest. Dr. Pranab Kumar Ghosh, Upazilla Livestock Officer, presented the key note paper for the seminar. The main discussant for this seminar was Dr. Kazi Md. Kamar Uddin, Member Director, BARC. The paper presented detail information on historical background of the virus, mode of transmission, possible threats and tentative economic loss which could take place if the virus massively infects the poultry industry of the country. The speaker concluded with stating recommendations for developing stronger preventive measures for this virus.

Cultural Program and Dinner for celebrating the installation of the newly elected JICA Alumni

JICA Alumni Association celebrated the installation of its new executive committee on July 28, 2006 at LGED auditorium, Agargaon. Minister for Jute and Textile, Mr. Shajahan Siraj MP was the chief guest while JICA Resident Representative Mr. Akio Arai was the special guest for the installation event. A large number of JICA Alumni members belonging to different government departments participated in the event. Chief Guest, in his speech congratulated the newly elected members and lauded the activities of JICA Alumni Association for strengthening relationship between Japan and Bangladesh. The programme was concluded by a colorful cultural programme followed by dinner. Popular artists and folk singers took part in the cultural program.

Resident Representative of JICA meets DCC Mayor

On 12 July, 2006 Resident Representative of JICA, Mr. Akio Arai visited the Mayor of Dhaka City Mr. Sadeq Hossain Khoka at Nagar Bhaban. Their discussion focused on following issues: a) Progress of implementation of the Clean Dhaka Master Plan b) Organizational capacity development and c) Future Plan of DCC for improvement of Solid Waste Management of Dhaka city. The mayor informed the meeting that DCC is very keen to strengthen solid waste management activities and they are undertaking steps for setting up permanent waste management structure in DCC. The mayor requested JICA's help in enhancing DCC's capacity for efficient waste management. In response, Resident Representative of JICA assured support to DCC in DCC's endeavour to realize the Clean Dhaka Master Plan. . In this regard, the mayor was informed about two JOCV's (Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers) joining the DCC's waste management division for community management and environment education activities. Their main purpose would be to motivate local people to be aware about their own responsibilities for keeping their surrounding areas clean. Chief Executive Officer, Chief Conservancy Officer of DCC and JICA officials were present at the meeting.

Ikebana Course

In order to facilitate the process of cultural exchange between Japan and Bangladesh, JICA Alumni organized a two month long Ikebana course with twenty participants. This course will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of this popular Japanese flower arrangement.

Ms. Nilufer Yeasmin, Associate Professor of Home Economics College is the resource person for the Ikebana course while almost 20 women from different educational institutions registered for this course. It is expected that this course will not only help the participants know about the rich cultural heritage of a different country but will also assist in sharpening their aesthetic sense of combining beauty with simplicity .
