The ceremony, under the attendance of Mr.Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, the Hon'ble Finance Minister, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh as Chief Guest, is held at Hotel Ascott on December 10, 2013. Mr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Secretary, Economic Relations Division, Mr. Khandker Anwarul Islam, Secretary, Bridges Division, and Mr. M. A. N. Siddique, Secretary, Roads Division, Ministry of Communication also attended the ceremony.
"JICA Recognition Award" is awarded to individuals or groups to express JICA's gratitude for the cooperation and long standing contribution to JICA's activities. Individual awardees are only 4 persons including Dr. Jamilur Reza Choudhury and the others in Thailand, Viet Nam and Indonesia, while JICA has been conducting its development projects to more than 170 countries in the world.
It takes more than 25 years that Dr. Choudhury has supported the development projects assisted by JICA from civil engineering point of view, especially JICA ODA loan projects such as "Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge Project", "Chittagong Airport Development Project" and "Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project".
Regarding "Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge Project", Dr. Choudhury advised Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge Authority in preparation of Terms of Reference for feasibility studies and environmental impact studies, provided technical guidance during the studies and advised the government policymakers in discussions with co-financiers as Chairman, Local Panel of Experts.
Regarding "Chittagong Airport Development Project", Dr. Choudhury advised the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh and Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, Government of Bangladesh, in various aspects of planning, design, progress monitoring, quality control and contract management for the Shah Amanat International Airport at Chittagong, as Team Leader, Expert Advisory Team for the Project.
Regarding "Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project", the route of MRT Line 6 is decided based on Dr. Choudhury suggested based on high validity, including most economical effect.
Though the countrywide blockade program and hartal happen, executing agencies, consultants and contractors of JICA's projects are eager to implement the projects to complete on time. In addition, Japanese technology such as "steel pipe sheet foundation" and "steel narrow box girder bridge" will be used in the new ODA Loan Project which name is "The Kanchpur, Maghna and Gumti 2nd Bridges Construction and Existing Bridges Rehabilitation Project" signed on March 10, 2013. JICA has continuously supported to the integrated development in Bangladesh through transportation sector which total project amount is 4 billion US Dollars in the past 20 years.
