Seminar on Strengthening Health Systems Through Organizing Communities (SHASTO) Project
Support Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Control to realize UHC

A seminar of JICA project, the project for Strengthening Heath Systems Through Organizing Communities (SHASTO) was held on 27th June, 2018 at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC). Mr. Zahid Maleque, MP, Honorable State Minister was Chief Guest of the event while Ambassador of Japan in Bangladesh was also graced the occasion.

At the beginning of the seminar, JICA Chief Advisor of SHASTO project shared the introduction of the project and its progress. She expressed that the situation of NCD in Bangladesh is alarming and now is the time to deliver the action towards NCD control. She also stated the four targeted outputs of SHASTO project, 1) Delivering Integrated NCDs and Maternal Health Services, 2) Strengthening Hospital Management for Service Quality Improvement, 3) Promoting NCD Prevention Activities through working with Community Support Groups, and 4) Replication of good practice and lessons learnt of the project.

Dr. Abdul Alim, Deputy Program Manager of NCD Control Programme, Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) presented the priority activities of his department and its challenges during the seminar. As a final presentation, Dr. Malay Kanti Mridha, Associate Professor of BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health presented the result of the Baseline survey of the SHASTO Project. The survey targeted over 5,000 populations in both urban and rural area in Bangladesh, and the result showed 24% of males and 38% of females are hypertensive.

After the presentation, Chief Representative of JICA Bangladesh and Prof. Dr. Abul Kalam Azad, Director General of Health Services, DGHS, MOHFW delivered their speeches of Special Guests. His Excellency, Ambassador of Japan in Bangladesh shared his own experience of quitting smoking. Mr. Zahid Maleque, MP, Honorable State Minister, MOHFW, in his speech, committed to provide his full support and hopefulness of achieving Universal Health Coverage through NCDs Control.

At the end of the function, Chol Chol Exercise was introduced as a model example of physical activities. The exercise was developed in 2016 jointly by Japan Oversea Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) and Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP) to promote regular physical activities in schools and other institutions in Bangladesh. Invitees of the function participated the exercise and encouraged to share with their colleagues and practice at their office. About SHASTO project

SHASTO is a project of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) supported by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The project aims to improve both Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) and Maternal Health services in an integrated manner with a community based approach through mobilizing Community Group (CG) and Community Support Group (CSG). The project officially started from July 2017 and will continue for five years.
