DPHE, IOM and JICA, Signing of Minutes of meeting on large scale water supply assistance to a camp for evacuee from Myanmar

The signing ceremony of Minutes of meeting on large scale water supply assistance to a camp for evacuee from Myanmar among Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE), International Organization for Migration (IOM) and JICA was held on IOM Headquarter in Bangladesh on 10th July 2018. Representative from each organization, Mr Mohammad Saifur Rahman, Superintending Engineer(CC) from DPHE, Mr Giorgi Gigauri, Chief of Mission from IOM and Mr Yasuhiro Kawazoe, Senior Representative, JICA Bangladesh Office attended the ceremony and signed the minutes.

Since August 2017, taking consideration of the situation that drinking water sources are running dry and contaminated from E.Coli at large number of shallow tubewells, JICA has been working with DPHE and IOM to set up water supply facility to supply sufficient and safe drinking water from the deep tube well for the evacuees and host communities in the area.

In April 2018, JICA conducted the groundbreaking ceremony for this water supply assistance with DPHE and IOM on June 2018, it was confirmed that it could supply safe drinking water to the area from the deep tube well that JICA drilled at larger rate than initially expected 500m3 per an hour. Now, IOM is working for setting up water supply network from the same groundwater source in order to cover approximately 40,000 people in the area and it is expected to be completed by the beginning of coming dry season when deterioration of water quality at shallow tubewells is likely to happen.
