Integration, Promotion of Peace and Social Cohesion through Baseball

Burkina Faso had age-old practices of easing tensions whenever a conflict arose. The palaver tree and joking kinship were among some social methods used. Unfortunately, we are currently witnessing a crumbling of the social fabric that divides its population. Since 2015, the country has been experiencing a fragile security situation, what has caused internal displacement of thousands of people.

This situation led to the suspension of the deployment of Japanese volunteers, which did not affected JICA/BF's will to contribute to the development of Burkina Faso through social cohesion and peace-building activities

In this sense, the Burkinabe Federation of Baseball and Softball held a day of integration, promotion of peace and social cohesion through baseball with the aim of involving young people in building peace, social cohesion and security. It therefore intends to reconcile youth, peace and security in order to establish true ambassadors of social cohesion in schools through baseball.

This activity provided an opportunity to create a mingling environment between host children and internal displaced children, introduce them baseball through demonstrations, play a baseball and baseball5 game with participants and form a mixed team.

Approximately 150 people, including internally displaced persons, host populations and local authorities representing the Ministry of Sports, Youth and Employment, the Regional Directorate of Humanitarian Action, the Regional Directorate of Agriculture, the Sanmatenga High Commission and the Principal of the provincial high school, attended the event.

Baseball5 will be one of the events of the Youth Olympic Games scheduled to take place in Senegal in 2026 and JICA wish to popularize it in Burkina Faso.
