Ground Breaking Ceremony on the Project for Flood Protection and Drainage Improvement in Phnom Penh Capital City (Phase III)

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Cambodia Office would like to announce that the ground breaking ceremony for "The Project for Flood Protection and Drainage Improvement in Phnom Penh Capital City (Phase III) was organized on Monday, 26th March 2012 at the west of Sampov Meas Pagoda, Sangkat Veal Vong, Khan 7 Makara, Phnom Penh Capital City. The ceremony was presided over by Ms. MEN Sam An, Deputy Prime Minister of the Royal Government of Cambodia and Excellency MASAFUMI Kuroki, Japanese Ambassador with the participation of representatives of high rank officials of the relevant ministries/institutions, local authorities, residents living in the project areas and others.

Japanese Government has provided grant assistances in the total amount of 4.7 billion Japanese Yen, equivalent to USD 59 million to implement the Projects for Flood Protection and Drainage Improvement in Phnom Penh Capital City Phase I and Phase II in 2002 and 2007, respectively in order to improvement of the drainage system in the flood-prone areas of Phnom Penh City, particularly in the south-western areas and north-eastern areas of Phnom Penh Capital City. As the results, the frequent flooding in these areas has been significantly reduced.

The Project for Flood Protection and Drainage Improvement (Phase III) that was launched is also financed by Japanese Government (Grant Aid) in the amount of 3.7 billion Japanese Yen, equivalent to USD 46 million. The project is to (i) improve drainage system of 20,654 m in Ou Russey area (3,926 m), Boeng Reang area (2,433 m), along Monyret Road (2,047 m), Tuol Svay Prey area ( 2,524m), Tuol Sleng area (2,475m), Boeng Keng Kang area ( 3,045 m) , North Tuol Tumpoung area(1,147 m) and South Tuol Tumpong area ( 3,057 m), (ii) reconstruct the big chamber as the underground reservoir under the Park at the corner of Street 240, (iii) supply Water Jet Machines (2 Sets) and Sludge Suckers ( 2 Sets), (iv) train the technical staff of Phnom Penh Department of Public Works and Transport for operation and maintenance of the procured equipment. The construction period of the project started from 16 January 2012 and scheduled to be completed on 31 October 2015.

This Phase 3 Project will contribute to the restoration and economical and social development and improvement of environment-friendly living conditions of residents living in the above mentioned areas (south-eastern areas) and Phnom Penh Capital areas as the whole.
