JICA Chair Special lecture held at University of Antananarivo, Madagascar

On 3rd March, 2022, the first JICA Chair special lecture in Francophone Africa was held at the University of Antananarivo, Madagascar, and more than 100 people participated. Dr. Kitaoka, JICA President, gave a follow-up lecture on “Chapter 1. Meiji Revolution: Start of Full-Scale Modernization” from DVD material "Seven Chapters on Japanese Modernization" followed by a Question and Answer session. JICA, in partnership with the University of Antananarivo, plan to hold subsequent JICA Chair lectures on “Development Experience of Japan and Her Cooperation with Africa” and “Educational Development in Modernization in Japan”.

JICA Chair Special seminar held at University of Juba, South Sudan

On 25th February, 2022, the First JICA Chair special seminar in South Sudan was held at University of Juba. With the theme of "Japanese Modernization: An adaptation to Enhance National Identity and Uniqueness in South Sudan", “Chapter 1. Meiji Revolution: Start of Full-Scale Modernization” from DVD material "Seven Chapters on Japanese Modernization" was shown and some books related to Japanese Modernization were donated. There were lively discussion among panelists and participants. After the seminar, participants expressed high expectations for continuous seminars. JICA plan to hold regular seminars and book donation collaborated with Embassy of Japan in South Sudan, at University of Juba as JICA Chair.

JICA Chair Lecture Held at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kenya

From 16th~18th November, 2021, the JICA Chair lecture was held at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), in Kenya. Collaborating with the on-going technical cooperation project, this online lecture focused on Japanese experience of agriculture. About 370 students participated the lecture and question regarding agricultural productivity was given. There was also lively discussion among participants. After those lectures, JICA will support more for establishment of a center for Japanese Studies in Kenya.

First JICA Chair Program Kicks Off in Ethiopia

Addis Ababa University and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) jointly organized the first "JICA Chair (JICA Program for Japanese Studies)" on October 27, 2021, under the theme of "Education for Development in Ethiopia: Experiences and Lessons from Japan" at Addis Ababa University. The program started from the introduction of JICA Chair by Dr. Katsuki Morihara, Chief Representative of JICA Ethiopia Office, and welcoming and opening remarks were delivered respectively by Dr. Emebet Mulugeta, Academic Vice President of Addis Ababa University and H.E. Ms. Takako Ito, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ethiopia. After the opening remarks, lecture on the "Uniqueness of Japan's cooperation in the education sector in Africa" was presented by Dr. Yumiko YOKOZEKI, Director of UNESCO IICBA. In addition, to contextualize JICA's cooperation experience to the field level, "Lessons from Japan's Cooperation in the Education Sector in Ethiopia" was also shared by Ms. Etenesh Mekonnen, National Trainer (Biology) of Mathematics and Science Education Improvement Center (MSIC), Ministry of Education.

Addis Ababa University and JICA will continue to hold the JICA Chair in different fields of study.

Special lecture series at University of Rwanda with JICA Chair (JICA Program for Japanese Studies)

Special lecture series with JICA Chair were held at University of Rwanda on June and August 2021. After Opening Event with Video Message from KITAOKA Shinichi, JICA President, the first lecture entitled "Economic development in Asia and Africa and Japan’s Contribution through its Official Development Assistance” was given by Professor KATO Hiroshi, International University of Japan and the second lecture entitled "Industrial policy and development in East Asia and Global value chain (GVC)-led development strategy and its applicability in Africa" was given by KUROIWA Ikuo, University of Niigata Prefecture. The participants, including students and government official, showed great interests in the topics and the lively discussions took place throughout both lectures. Both lectures ended successfully and we received many positive feedbacks telling that the lectures were very helpful for considering the development of Rwanda. University of Rwanda also showed expectations for continuing JICA chair lectures.

First JICA Chair Special Lecture in Sub-Saharan Africa at Joaquim Chissano University, Mozambique

On June 9th 2021, JICA Chair Kick-off seminar was held at the Joaquim Chissano University (UJC) in Mozambique, which was the first JICA Chair seminar in Sub-Saharan Africa region.. Following the opening remarks by President, Dr José Magode, UJC, H.E. Mr. Kimura, Ambassador of Japan in Mozambique, Mozambique government officials and Mr. Endo, Chief Representative of JICA Mozambique Office gave special speech. After that, Dr. Kayashima Nobuko Senior Vice President of JICA gave a special lecture entitled "Educational Development in Modernization in Japan" and there was a lively discussion and Q&A session with the participants. The number of participants exceeded 150 including online, and many students and others evaluated this session. Some participants requested the next session with the theme such as Japanese industrial policy and so on.
