On February 8, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of the Republic of Senegal in Dakar, the capital city, to provide grant aid of up to 2.934 billion yen for the Project for Urgent Rehabilitation and Strengthening of Energy Distribution Network in Dakar Region.
The project will rehabilitate and strengthen a SOCOCIM switching station located in the eastern part of Dakar Region, converting it to a substation. The project will also improve the power distribution network in the surrounding region to stabilize the supply of electricity to the eastern part of Dakar Region, particularly in the new developing areas of Dakar.
With firm economic growth and a rising population in recent years, Senegal overall has seen its power demand more than double from 234 megawatts in 2000 to 557 megawatts in 2016, and the power demand is expected to continue rising in the future. In order to minimize the gap between supply and demand, the Government of Senegal has implemented initiatives to increase the amount of power generation. However, due to deficiencies in substations and other power distribution facilities, the rate of power transmission and distribution loss has reached more than 20 percent and power outages are common. A stable supply of power is therefore a national challenge. While development has conventionally been focused in the central part of Dakar, the capital city located in Dakar Region, new development areas (Diamniadio and Daga Kholpa) are being established in the eastern part of the region as new urban development poles. With such developments, a stable supply of power to the eastern part of Dakar Region in particular is urgently needed.
By converting the current SOCOCIM switching station to a substation, it is expected that the project will make it possible to supply 204 gigawatt-hours of power to the eastern part of Dakar Region per year by 2023. This should reduce the power outages and is expected to facilitate economic activities in the target region.
