JICA began its economic cooperation to Cuba when it accepted training participants in 1960. So far, JICA has mainly provided assistance in boosting rice yields to increase Cuba's food self-sufficiency, along with cooperation related to environmental conservation and climate change, centered in Havana, the capital. In reaction to the stronger bilateral relations of recent years, JICA has begun cooperation in the field of health and medicine.
JICA is taking this opportunity to expand projects to the new fields of energy and transportation, and carry out projects already underway in a more effective and efficient manner.
