JICA to Send Emergency Supplies to Landslide-Stricken Afghanistan

JICA will provide emergency supplies to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in response to damage caused by a landslide, following a request from the government of Afghanistan.

Heavy rainfall has continued in northern Afghanistan, and a resulting landslide caused significant human and material damage. Many people were killed or went missing.

The victims as of May 4 include approximately 400 people killed, 2,500 missing and 4,000 evacuated. The landslide also caused some 250 homes to collapse, according to an announcement by a government official of Afghanistan.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency will provide emergency supplies including 100 tents, 300 blankets and 300 sleeping pads with a total value of approximately US$110,000.

The supplies will be delivered to Kabul International Airport using the earliest available flight.
