Fabrizio Hochschild, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Strategic Coordination, right, and JICA President Shinichi Kitaoka
JICA President Shinichi Kitaoka met with Fabrizio Hochschild, United Nations assistant secretary-general for strategic coordination, at JICA Headquarters in Tokyo on March 7.
They discussed the response to refugees from Syria and South Sudan as refugee situations worsen around the world. With no signs visible of a permanent solution, JICA is supporting long-term solutions for refugees with assistance to improve refugees' livelihoods through vocational training and reconciliation between refugees and host communities. Mr. Hochschild said the U.N. values these contributions by JICA and he expects JICA to continue playing a role in internationally important problems.
The two discussed various problems facing the international community, including the Rohingya crisis and the destabilization of the international order. They agreed that the role of the U.N. and cooperation by the international community are important to achieve greater unity in the world.
