JICA President Shinichi Kitaoka held talks with United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet on March 22 at JICA Headquarters in Tokyo.

Dr. Bachelet began the talks by saying that as promoting human security is one of the basic policies in Japan’s Development Cooperation Charter and human rights are a cornerstone of human security, she looks forward to strengthening her office’s partnership with JICA. Dr. Bachelet also expressed her appreciations for the Disaster Risk Reduction Training Program for Latin America and the Caribbean (KIZUNA Project), which JICA has been implementing in Chile, her birth country.

Dr. Kitaoka and Dr. Bachelet then discussed the two agencies’ measures related to human rights in a wide range of fields, including the rule of law, gender equality, refugee assistance and cooperation for rule of law promotion.

JICA will continue contributing to realizing human security in partnership with United Nations agencies.
