The West African nation of Senegal is subject to the extremes of the continent's climate and geography: hot, dry winds which blow off the Sahara desert and torrential gales arriving from the Atlantic ocean; fringes of mangrove forests and marshland and huge sweeps of savannah grasslands and majestic baobob trees.

It is one of Africa's politically most stable countries but needs assistance in many areas and JICA is involved in projects ranging from agriculture and fisheries, providing safe water and improved health services and improving education and vocational training both domestically and building Senegal as a hub for surrounding French-speaking nations.
