It is a vast land of ancient civilizations, sweeping deserts, mountains, savannah and one of the world’s mightiest rivers, the Nile. But since independence in 1956, the land known as Sudan has been plagued by conflict between the mainly Moslem north and Christian animist south and on July 9, 2011 officially split into two countries, the Republic of Sudan and the Republic of South Sudan.
Though potentially rich in natural resources, both countries are among the world’s poorest. JICA has offices in both nations and is helping in post conflict reconstruction in such areas as health, education, vocational training, water and agriculture.
The photo gallery highlights the history, beauty and potential of Sudan and some of JICA’s projects.
