Timor-Lese is a land of magnificent beaches and mountains.
But during decades of conflict before independence in 2002 much of the country was destroyed and there were tens of thousands of casualties.
The landscape is still scarred by the debris of war, but JICA is slowly helping one of the world’s newest and poorest countries to slowly recover with a series of projects ranging from rice and coffee to roads and government administration.
And one of the JICA staff who is promoting the martial arts discipline of aikido supervises classes and encourages local residents as part of a personal keep-fit program while he lives in Timor-Leste.
