On April 2, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar in Dawei, to provide grant aid of up to 2.281 billion yen for the Project for Improvement of Magway General Hospital

This project will construct a new wing that includes an obstetrics and gynecology ward, a neonatal unit, an emergency department and a surgery department on the existing campus of Magway General Hospital, the core medical facility for Magway Region. The project will also provide the equipment required for the new facilities to improve the medical services at the hospital, thereby contributing to better living for residents.

Located in Magway (population: 289,000 people), the core city of Magway Region (population: 3.917 million people), Magway General Hospital has a substandard health care environment for patients that includes inadequate facilities and equipment, and, with a bed occupancy rate exceeding 100 percent, insufficient space for patients. Because of these deficiencies, some patients must be released before their treatment is complete and some are unable to receive surgery. Given this situation, it is critical that the hospital facilities and equipment are upgraded to improve the health care services in Magway Region.

This project will provide a total of 100 beds for the obstetrics and gynecology departments, and 20 beds for the neonatal unit to eliminate the chronic shortage of beds at Magway General Hospital. Facilities and equipment will also be provided for the surgery, orthopedic surgery and obstetrics and gynecology departments so that advanced surgery and emergency surgery can be performed in an appropriate environment, as well as to increase the number of surgeries that can be performed to meet the expected population increase. It is hoped that these improvements will strengthen Magway General Hospital so that it can better function as the core hospital for Magway Region with improved health care and medical services. In addition to this project, JICA is implementing technical cooperation to strengthen the health care system and medical education in Myanmar, comprehensively supporting the expansion of health care and medical services there.
