On May 11, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement (G/A) with the Government of Burkina Faso to provide grant aid of up to 1.561 billion yen for the Project for the Construction of the Building of Post-primary Schools (Phase II).
The project will construct new post-primary schools and provide educational materials in Centre-Ouest (Center-West), Centre-Sud (Center-South) and Centre (Center) Regions, improving the learning environment and the access to post-primary education in the target regions, and contributing to an improved quality of education there.
Although Burkina Faso has achieved an 83.7 percent total enrollment ratio for primary education (2014/2015), the ratio for post-primary education is merely 44.9% (2014/2015). One of the reasons for this low rate is an inadequate number of post-primary schools. The country also faces the challenges of a worsening learning environment and a drop in the quality of learning due to factors such as a rising student-to-classroom ratio due to an inadequate number of classrooms.
The project will construct 32 new post-primary schools (approximately 180 classrooms) which should accommodate 8,640 students in three regions near the capital with an especially serious scarcity of classrooms. By also building a favorable learning environment that includes separate lavatory facilities for boys and girls, adequate classroom furniture and the like, it is expected that this project will improve the quality of education.
Combining this project with technical cooperation for assisting in the proposal of educational policies and the improvement of school management, JICA is continuing to advance comprehensive support aimed at improving the learning environment and the knowledge of children in Burkina Faso.
