On December 12, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement (G/A) with the Government of the Republic of Cameroon to provide grant aid of up to 1.357 billion yen for the Project of Improvement in Fishing Unloading Facility and Fish Market of Youpwe in Douala City.
This project will construct a revetment, market buildings and other facilities at the fishing boat unloading area in the Youpwe area of Douala, improve the safety and efficiency of the unloading of marine catches, and streamline the marine products sales environment. Through these efforts, the project aims to improve the working environment for workers in the fisheries industry and improve product quality.
With a rising domestic population, Cameroon is expected to see a rise in demand for marine products as a supply source of inexpensive animal protein, and there is a need for a stable supply of marine products. As micro-fishing accounts for at least 75 percent of the total volume of sea fisheries products in Cameroon, it is expected that improvements in fishing technologies and the improvements to the fisheries product distribution environment planned for this project will promote the micro shallow-water fishing industry, contributing to a stable supply of marine products.
Douala is the most populous and largest commercial city in Cameroon, and the Youpwe fishing boat unloading area in Douala is the largest such area for the micro-fisheries industry, playing an important role as a seafood supply base for the city. However, the work area where catches are unloaded from fishing boats is not stable due to a lack of proper unloading facilities, making improvements a priority. Due to the lack of a sanitary environment, fisheries products are traded and processed on the road under the blazing sun, degrading the quality of marine products. The construction of a sanitary marketplace is therefore a priority.
By providing a safe and sanitary work environment at the existing fishing boat unloading area in Youpwe for fishers and other workers, as well as for those involved in the sale and distribution in and around the existing market, this project is expected to shorten the time required to unload freighters, increase the number of shops that can sell seafood in the market without being affected by direct sunlight, and improve the quality of marine products. To provide a more pleasant working environment for the many women who work at the target location, considerations such as separate locker rooms and rest rooms for men women will be made.
Including work on this project, JICA will continue providing comprehensive assistance for growth and job creation toward stable economic and social development in Cameroon.
