Signing of Grant Agreement with Myanmar: Supporting healthcare and medical services through facility and equipment upgrades at a regional core hospital

On February 6, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar in Nay Pyi Taw, the capital city, to provide grant aid of up to 2.665 billion yen for the Project for the Improvement of Dawei General Hospital.

The project will construct a new building on the existing grounds of Dawei General Hospital, a core hospital in Tanintharyi Region at the southernmost edge of the country, the building to include outpatient, diagnostic imaging, surgery and sterilization departments, a laboratory unit, endoscopy unit, and intensive care unit (ICU). The project will also provide essential equipment, improving the medical services at the hospital, thereby contributing to improvements in the health and lives of local residents.

Despite improvements seen in recent years, countermeasures are still needed in Myanmar for mother and child health and for infectious diseases, and there has also been a rising trend in the number of patients with non-communicable diseases caused by changing lifestyle habits that have accompanied the rapid economic growth in recent years. The average number of outpatients at Dawei General Hospital has growth 2.74 times in the three years from 2013 to 2016, with an increase of 1.51 times the average number of hospitalized patients. In addition, the number of surgeries has steadily increased from 2,723 in 2013 to 4,354 in 2016. Despite these increases, however, the hospital facilities are confined for space, and the patient diagnostic and treatment environment is inadequate, leaving patients unable to receive needed surgery.

The project will build a new building in which the central diagnosis, testing and treatment functions will be integrated, making it possible to efficiently accommodate the rising number of outpatients and inpatients. With the surgery department, the sterilization department and the ICU facilities and equipment provided by the project, it will be possible to perform more surgeries in a safer environment. In addition to this project, JICA has been carrying out technical cooperation to strengthen the healthcare systems and maintenance and management systems for medical equipment, providing comprehensive measures to expand and improve healthcare and medical services in Myanmar.
