signing ceremony
On May 15, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of the Republic of the Philippines in Manila to provide grant aid of up to two billion yen for the Programme for the Support for Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of Marawi City and its Surrounding Areas.
In order to support the reconstruction of the lives of people who have suffered in the fighting in Marawi, a city on Mindanao in the southern part of the Philippines, the project will provide financial support to rehabilitation and construction projects for the social infrastructure in and around Marawi City.
In May 2017, armed conflict broken out between the Philippine military and the radical Islamic Maute group, lasting for five months until October when the battle was declared over. Marawi City sustained destructive damage in the conflict, including, at one time, as many as 354,000 internally displaced persons, many of whom remain internally displaced. Recovery and restoration are desired as fast as possible in Marawi City and the surrounding area to reconstruct the lives of the displaced persons. While a task force working across departments in the Government of the Philippines is formulating a recovery and restoration program, it is essential that financial support is obtained from the international community.
By providing high-priority social infrastructure (including roads, schools and medical centers) and advancing recovery and restoration, the present program is expected to contribute to stability in the area and to the reconstruction of lives of disaster victims.
In addition to this project, JICA continuously provides inclusive support for sustainable stability and development in the area affected by the conflict in Mindanao, including governance, agricultural and infrastructure support.
