On August 21, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions with the Government of the Republic of Mauritius in Port Louis for the Project for Enhancing Meteorological Observation, Weather Forecasting and Warning Capabilities, a technical cooperation project.
The project aims to enhance the meteorological observation, weather forecasting and warning capabilities of Mauritius Meteorological Services to disseminate highly accurate meteorological information to disaster-related organizations and the public in a timely manner.
Mauritius is an island nation in an area of the southwest Indian Ocean where cyclones frequently occur, and disasters such as torrential rains, floods, landslides and storm surges strike often. JICA has established a record of providing technical cooperation to Mauritius in the fields of disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation for improving the capacity to prevent landslides and improve coastal conservation. In addition, JICA is currently implementing the Project for Improvement of the Meteorological Radar System, a grant aid project for improving the country’s only meteorological radar system. With the added support of the present project, it is hoped that JICA can contribute to improving the capacity for disaster risk reduction in Mauritius through support to strengthen meteorological services.
