On April 4, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions with the government of the Lao People's Democratic Republic in Vientiane for the Project for Capacity Development of Tax Administration in LaoPDR, a technical cooperation project.

This project aims to enhance the capacity of Laotian tax officers by introducing appropriate methods for managing taxpayers and taxpayer services.

In Laos, debt sustainability has deteriorated due to rising public debt and growth of expenditures, creating a problem with public finances. To help remedy this situation, JICA has been cooperating with the country since 2017 to improve its tax administration.

This project is expected to increase future tax revenue and contribute to development of the country’s taxation system by improving the Tax Department’s capacity for administering taxes.

JICA provides support to the Lao People's Democratic Republic for sustainable economic development through cooperation on public finance and governance.
