Signing of Grant Agreement with Nigeria: Contributing to a Stronger Diagnostic Capacity through the construction of biosafety level 3 laboratories

On April 9, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Abuja to provide grant aid of up to 1.58 billion yen for the Project for Strengthening the Diagnostic Capacity of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

Under this project, biosafety level (BSL)* 3 containment laboratories and other facilities will be installed on the grounds of the National Reference Laboratory at the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control. This initiative is expected to strengthen the management and surveillance system, thereby contributing to the establishment of a comprehensive and resilient health care system in Nigeria.

(2) Consulting services: Detailed design work, bidding assistance, construction/procurement supervision (As guidance in managing the facilities) technical guidance for the operation and maintenance of the air conditioning and ventilation equipment, special laboratory equipment, and infectious discharge treatment system in the BSL2 and BSL3 laboratories

* Biosafety level: A ranking system from 1 to 4 for facilities handling microorganisms, pathogens and other biological agents. The higher the number, the higher the level of hazardous biological agents that a ranked facility is able to handle.
