On 1 November, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a grant agreement with the Royal Government of Cambodia in Phnom Penh, to provide grant aid of up to 2.777 billion yen for the Project for Sewerage System Development in Phnom Penh.

The Project contributes to improving the water and sanitation environment, and living environment of people, by constructing a new sewerage treatment plant and related facilities, becoming the country’s first in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia.

Due to rapid urbanization and population growth in Phnom Penh, the quantity of wastewater in the city is increasing. However, lakes and wet zones where wastewater is purified naturally has been reclaimed. The purification capacity of wastewater has also decreased. Therefore, it is an urgent issue to develop the sewerage system.

The Project contributes to the sustainable development of the urban environment through developing the sewerage system in the surrounding area of Cheung Aek Lake where water quality is rapidly deteriorating and treating the wastewater appropriately in the target district.

In addition to this project, JICA is implementing “The Project for Capacity Development for Sewerage Management of Phnom Penh Capital Administration and the Ministry of Public Works and Transport” (2019-2023), a technical cooperation, and “The Project for Capacity Building of the Operation and Maintenance of the Sewerage and Drainage System in Phnom Penh Capital City” (2017-2020), a JICA partnership program. JICA will continue providing comprehensive support for improving the water environment in Cambodia.
