Signing of Japanese ODA Loan Agreements with Myanmar: Comprehensive Support for Economic and Social Development

On January 21, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed loan agreements (L/A) with the Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar in Nay Pyi Taw, the capital city, to provide Japanese ODA loans of up to a total of 120.915 billion yen for four projects.

The signed loan agreements consist of the following four projects, which will comprehensively support socioeconomic development in Myanmar.
(1) Yangon Sewerage System Development Project (loan amount: 45.9 billion yen)
(2) Yangon Urban Development Project (loan amount: 24.085 billion yen)
(3) Urban Area Power Distribution Improvement Project (loan amount: 12.288 billion yen)
(4) Regional Infrastructure Improvement Project (loan amount: 38.642 billion yen)


Details for the projects are provided below.

(1) Yangon Sewerage System Development Project
(a) Objective and Summary
The objective of the Project is to improve waste water treatment service in Yangon city by improving and expanding waste water treatment plant and renewing and installing sewer pipe network in Yangon city, thereby contributing to improvements of the living environment of residents in Yangon city.

(c) Planned Implementation Schedule
1. Completion of project: February 2028 – when the facilities are put into service
2. Issuing of letters of invitation for consulting services (including Detail Design): March 2019
3. Tender announcement of initial procurement packages for international competitive bidding on project construction:
Procurement package titles: Construction of WWTP, Construction of Main Sewers
Planned release date: August 2020

(2) Yangon Urban Development Project
(a) Objective and Summary
The objective of the Project is to improve urban environment of Yangon city by measures including rehabilitation of drainage facilities, removing bottlenecks on major roads and improving streetscape in the central business district, and thereby contributing to social economic development of Yangon city.

(3) Urban Area Power Distribution Improvement Project
(a) Objective and Summary
The objective of the Project is to improve power supply by repairing and reinforcing distribution facilities in Yangon region and Mandalay region, thereby contributing to economic development and improvement of living standards in Myanmar.

(4) Regional Infrastructure Improvement Project
(a) Objective and Summary
The objective of the Project is to improve living standards in regional areas, through rehabilitation, construction and installation of basic infrastructure such as roads, bridges, electricity and water supply facilities, thereby contributing to sustainable socio-economic development in regional areas in Myanmar.
