Signing of Record of Discussions on Technical Cooperation Project with India: Contributing to better environmental sanitation in the largest sacred place of Hinduism

On January 28, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions with the Government of Republic of India in Delhi for the Project for the Comprehensive Improvement of Environmental Sanitation in Varanasi, a technical cooperation project.

The project aims to enhance the capacities of Varanasi Nagar Nigam (Health Department, Transport Wing and Jal Kal) and Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam, Varanasi Zonal Office, for solid waste management, reduction of non-revenue water (NRW), and wastewater treatment. The project will also contribute to the achievement of SDGs Goals 6 and 12.

Specific project details (provisional) To aim for better environmental sanitation in Varanasi city and the surrounding municipalities, improve solid waste management (collection and transport, intermediate treatment and final disposal), reduce NRW (implementation of pilot projects and formulation of manuals for reducing NRW), and improve wastewater treatment (septage management and compilation of on-site wastewater treatment technologies), through enhancement of the capacities of Varanasi Nagar Nigam (Health Department, Transport Wing and Jal Kal) and Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam, Varanasi Zonal Office.
