Signing of Japanese ODA Loan Agreements with Cambodia: Supporting improvements to the Southern Economic Corridor, a major arterial route for the Mekong Region

On March 24, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed loan agreements with the Royal Government of Cambodia in Phnom Penh, to provide Japanese ODA loans of up to a total of 29.417 billion yen for the following two projects.

(1) National Road No.5 Improvement Project (Prek Kdam - Thlea Ma’am Section) (III) (loan amount: 11.715 billion yen)
(2) National Road No.5 Improvement Project (Thlea Ma’am - Battambang and Sri Sophorn - Poipet Sections) (II) (loan amount: 17.702 billion yen)

Details for the projects are provided below.

(1) National Road No.5 Improvement Project (Prek Kdam - Thlea Ma’am Section) (III)
(a) Objective and Summary
The objective of the Project is to increase the transportation capacity as well as to improve the logistic efficiency between the Prek Kdam and the Thlea Ma’am sections along National Road No.5 which connects the Phnom Penh Capital and the Thai border. It will do this by improving the condition of the existing road and constructing new bypasses, thereby contributing to the economic development of Cambodia. The project will contribute to the achievement of SDGs Goal 9.

(c) Planned Implementation Schedule
1. Completion of project: March 2022 – when the roads are put into service
2. Issuing of letters of invitation for consulting services (including detailed design work): Already hired
3. Tender announcement of initial procurement package for international competitive bidding on project construction: Already contracted

(2) National Road No.5 Improvement Project (Thlea Ma’am - Battambang and Sri Sophorn - Poipet Sections) (II)
(a) Objective and Summary
The objective of the Project is to increase the transportation capacity as well as to improve the logistic efficiency of the sections between Thlea Ma’am and Battambang, and Sri Sophorn and Poipet along National Road No.5 which connects the Phnom Penh Capital and the Thai border. It will do this by improving the condition of the existing road and constructing new bypasses, thereby contributing to the economic development of Cambodia. The project will contribute to the achievement of SDGs Goal 9.
