Signing of Japanese ODA Loan Agreements with Myanmar: Contributing to economic and social development through railway improvement and strengthening electricity supply capacity

On March 31, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed loan agreements (L/A) with the Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar in Nay Pyi Taw, the capital city, to provide Japanese ODA loans of up to a total of 47.943 billion yen for two projects.

The signed loan agreements consist of the following two projects.
(1)Yangon-Mandalay Railway Improvement Project Phase I (III) (loan amount: 40.604 billion yen)
(2)Infrastructure Development Project in Thilawa Area (Phase 3) (loan amount: 7.339 billion yen)

Details for the projects are provided below.

(1)Yangon-Mandalay Railway Improvement Project Phase 1 (III)

(a) Objective and Summary
The objective of the project is to improve the capacity of railway transportation by rehabilitating and modernizing the existing railway and related facilities from Yangon to Toungoo in part of the Yangon-Mandalay Railway thereby contributing to the economic development of Myanmar.

(2)Infrastructure Development Project in Thilawa Area (Phase 3)

(a) Objective and Summary
The objective of the project is to strengthen the electricity supply capacity of Myanmar by additionally installing combined cycle facilities at the Thilawa Thermal Power Plant in the Thilawa Special Economic Zone, and thereby contributing to economic and social development in Myanmar.

(b) Executing agency
