The Capacity Development Project for Countermeasure Works for Landslide

The development of infrastructure in Ethiopia is an important aspect in fostering sustainable development. However, due to geological factors regarding landslides in particular areas of the country, infrastructure development can be difficult. The Capacity Development Project for Countermeasure Works for Landslide was implemented in cooperation with the Ethiopian Road Authority (ERA) in 2011 to mitigate landslide problems along the national road in the Abay Gorge Region of Ethiopia. Due to limited Ethiopian knowledge on how to manage the landslide problem, this project aims to build the capacity of the ERA through a series of trainings and workshops. In this unique project, JICA offers technical support to its Ethiopian counterparts by creating a Landslide Task Unit composed of JICA experts and ERA engineers, road designers and managers. The project is currently in Phase II, which now focuses on Core Personnel Training. The JICA Mid-term Review Team visited the site in July 2013 and confirmed that the progress and success of the project is on schedule. By providing expertise in road construction and landslide prevention in order to construct durable roads and bridges that can overcome slope damage, JICA contributes to sustainable infrastructure development in Ethiopia.
