On September 05/2013, a handover ceremony of the project called "Enhancing Self-Sustainability of Women Agro-Processing Cooperatives in Ethiopia" was conducted in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on the presence of project partners.
The Project had been started in October 2010, with the collaboration between Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Ethiopia Office, the Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA), Sasakawa Global 2000 (SG2000), Ministry of Agriculture, Federal Cooperative Promotion Agency and respective Regional Bureaus of the Government of Ethiopia. The aim of the project was to organize resource-poor rural women into agro-processing groups, add value to their produce, and create market access to increase their income and improve their livelihood.
As a result SAA-SG2000 and partner organizations started the implementation of the proposed project in three Regional States of Amhara, Oromia and SNNP. With the strong commitment and collaboration of all the actors it was made possible to achieve the objective of the project in establishing 9 cooperatives and enable to operate and manage the cooperatives self-sustainably. Moreover the project has promoted these 9 cooperatives to be model sites and learning centers for other cooperatives in the agriculture sector.
