The diplomats' football tournament took place in Addis Ababa this month. The Japanese team, which included many JICA volunteers, won the tournament.
This yearly tournament is organized by the Diplomatic Spouses Group Ethiopia (DSGE) and has been taking place since 2014. Many countries with embassies in Addis Ababa alongside other international organizations participate; the goal is to encourage friendships among diplomatic missions.
A total of 36 teams, including 2 Japanese teams, participated this year. JICA volunteers assigned to rural areas came to Addis Ababa for this tournament, and 13 volunteers participated in 2 teams. The winning team included 7 JICA volunteers who teach football throughout Ethiopia. Their fantastic play led the team to victory; the third win for Japan since the tournament began. This has gained the Japanese team a fan-following and we are excited for similar results next year!
In the weeks leading up to the tournament, JICA's football volunteers also organized football workshops for children's ages 10 to 15 at their schools. These workshops were aim to promote the enjoyment that can be found from sports while showing children the basics of football skills.
In the past, workshops have been organized in Tigray and Amhara regions, as well as in Dire Dawa; the feedback from communities has always been very good.
With their demonstrated ability in this tournament, we wish the volunteers further success at their assigned places!
