The Project for Capacity Development for Improving Learning Achievement in Mathematics and Science Education in Ethiopia is officially launched

A team of JICA experts led by Dr.Norimichi Toyomane who is also principal Consultant has arrived in Addis Ababa on the 4th of October, 2014 to officially commence the implementation of the Project for Capacity Development for Improving Learning Achievement in Mathematics and Science Education in Ethiopia.

The project, which will be implemented nationwide for the coming three years, is set to extensively benefit the education experts and strengthen the institutional capacity of different unites of the Ministry of Education, Regional Education Bureaus in the field of examination and assessment, curriculum development with the view of qualitatively increasing learning achievement of students in the field of science and mathematics.

As part of launching of the Project the Team held a consultative discussion with H.E Ato Fuad Ibrahiem, State Minster of Ministry of Education, who is in charge of the general education sector of the Ministry where the designated project portfolio coordinated.

During the meeting, H.E the State Minister retreated that his government is striving to improve the quality of education in science and mathematics in general and its learning and assessment aspect in particular with the view of supplying technical and skilled manpower in the field of science and engineering to meet the demands of the ever growing economy .He further added "Federal Ministry of Education warmly welcomes and appreciates the additional input in this regard from JICA and its Ministry is keen to see the capacity development of its officials and the delivery of project output to the standard meanwhile" .

Dr.Toyomane the principal consultant on his part said that the Project is set to deliver outputs among others; the establishment of item bank for primary school leaving exams, develop work book and module for INSET and PRESET respectively in science and mathematics field. Having appreciated the State Minister for his warm welcome and kind cooperation, the team leader further requested the Ministry to play an active role and provide their kind cooperation during the implementation of the project in the upcoming there years for the realization.

The Team, who is already assumed its office in National Mathematics and Science Education Improvement Center, is currently holding preparatory and consultative meetings and discussions with project stakeholders under the Federal Ministry of Education to reach the consensus on the details of action plans and delivery schedules of the identified output of the Project. The Team is also scheduled to organize and hold its first National Steering Committee on the 3rd week of October 2014 comprising of relevant directorate of the Ministry of Education to deliberate on the designated detail project components and milestones.

It was learned that the Record of Discussion for the above designated project was signed on 11th June 2014 at the HQ of the Ministry of Education with the presence of H.E. Ato Fuad Ibrahiem, State Minster of Ministry of Education and Mr Jin.Kimaki, Chief Representative of JICA Ethiopia Office and witnessed by officials from the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development (MoFED).
