Human-Interest Story

My Success Story 2012 National Best Science Teacher in Seconderty Schools and Ex-Training Participants of JICA by Zakaria Abdulai – Tutor Juaben Senior High School

Background

To motivate teachers for higher performance and also to restore the respect the profession should enjoy, the National Best Teacher Award Scheme was introduced in 1995. Teachers have been recognized as the most important resource in the educational programmes through the various Educational Reforms started since 1987. Including the first three national best teachers who are chosen for their professional competence, personality factors, contribution to the community and some other factors, 84 winners in total are awarded. This year, Mr.Zakaria, an ex-training participant of JICA won the national best science teacher in secondary school. He tells his story.

Mr.Zakaria's story

I was selected to take part in a group training programme in the practice of science education in secondary schools between 4th August and 28th September, 2009. The course took place in Hiroshima University – Japan. The course was basically on:

(i) Experimental skills in science teaching

(ii) The use of locally available materials to prepare teaching and learning materials

When I came back from Japan I started organizing workshops for teachers and students on my own initiative. Many organizations and individuals recognized my effort and started including my activities in their programmes.

Some of the activities I have been doing since I came back from Japan are as follows. During the National Science, Technology, Mathematics and Innovation Education (STMIE) camp from 19th to 29th August 2012 for S.H.S students at Presec Legon, I did a show on simple science experiments that arouse the interest of students in science.

At the 2012 edition of the Ashanti Region STMIE clinic for J.H.S students in the region at Amass – Kumasi, I organized a science fair and took participants through simple funny science experiments (12th to 18th August, 2012, see right picture).

This year, I was nominated the best teacher in my school and so my name was submitted to my district (Ejisu-Juaben). I won the best district science teacher out of many teachers so my name was forwarded to the region (Ashanti region). Among many science teachers from all the districts in the Ashanti region, I was selected as the best science teacher for secondary schools in the region.

When the Ashanti regional education directorate presented me to the national level, the Ministry of Education considered my contributions to education and on 5th October 2012, I was awarded the national best science teacher in secondary schools.
