Kumasi Urban Development Plan: JICA and TCPD call on Asantehene

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Town and Country Planning Department (TCPD) and the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) paid a Courtesy Call to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei-Tutu II, on 9th November 2012 at the Royal Palace in Kumasi.

JICA has been conducting the Study on Comprehensive Urban Development Plan for Greater Kumasi with TCPD. Introduction of the new framework of urban development to the Asantehene is a key to the implementation of the plan and other JICA projects in Ashanti Region.

In the meeting, Mr. Sasaki, study-team leader, delivered a presentation about the Comprehensive Urban Development Plan for Greater Kumasi. Mr. Inamura, Chief Representative of JICA Ghana office, introduced other JICA projects in Ashanti Region.

In response to the presentation, the Ashantehene valued the importance of the plan and said that it is a good idea to extend development to the hinterlands instead of concentrating functions and activities inside Kumasi. He suggested that the team consult all the stakeholders including chiefs and consider residents around the city and millions of people transiting in Kumasi.

Mr. Sasaki intimated that traditional chiefs have attended stakeholders' meetings and showed his gratitude to the Ashantehene for the opportunity to report the findings of study.

The Ashantehene requested Mr. Sasaki to give a briefing to chiefs at the Traditional Council Meeting.

Mr. Poku, TCPD National Director, gratefully said that the meeting was really meaningful as we could meet His Majesty and narrated our activities to him. He added that it is a privilege to be given an opportunity to present the plan to chiefs.
