Ex-Japanese trainee organises training on prevention of soil-borne diseases in vegetables at MoFA


Department of Agriculture, Ga East Municipal Assembly organised a workshop on Soil Solarisation to control soil-borne diseases in vegetable nurseries on 26th November 2012 at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) Office in Abokobi.

Mr. Felix Nii Ayi Hammond, Municipal Director of Agric had opening remarks and Mrs. Rogatta Antwi-Baadu from Manicipal held presentation.

Mrs. Rogatta had Horticulture training by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Japan and Kenya. The workshop was to share her knowledge which learnt through JICA training to farmers and extension staff.

Her presentation was about how to control of soil-borne diseases in vegetable using solarisation. She explained the steps for conducting solarisation for nursery soil. During the discussion, there were some questions about plastic sheets for the solarisation. The sheets should have atransparent color for heating, these sheets are easily obtainable on the market.

After presentation, she demonstrated the solarisation for nursery soil as following pictures.

Delivering his closing remarks, Mr. Hayashi from JICA Ghana Office concluded; "I appreciate Mr. Felix's effort at putting this workshop togetherand Mrs. Rogatta's very good presentation and demonstration. She went to Japan for training and she has shared what she learnt with vegetable farmers in this community. I hope all participants will spread this knowledge to other farmers."
