Japan donates emergency relief items to Liberia

The Government of Japan through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has donated emergency relief supplies to the Republic of Liberia in a response to the current growing outbreak of Ebola in West Africa.

100 tents, 500 sleeping pads, and 500 blankets along with other items, total worth 30 million yen were provided upon request from the Government of the Republic of Liberia.

In the morning of 4th September, H.E. Mr. Naoto Nikai, Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Mrs. Musu J. Ruhle, Charge d'Affairs of Liberia High Commission in Ghana, Ms. Pippa Bradford, Country Director of WFP Ghana, Mr. Hiroshi Sumiyoshi, Senior Representative JICA Ghana and other officials participated in a handover ceremony to commemorate the delivery of Japanese relief items to Liberia. The ceremony took place at warehouse of the WFP/UNHRD Ghana in Accra.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Nikai mentioned about this contribution in view of humanitarian needs as well as the friendly relationship between Japan and Liberia. Liberian Charge d'Affairs Mrs. Ruhle expressed her gratitude for Japan's prompt assistance and gave appreciation towards Government of Ghana for its effort to host agencies including WFP which is logistical and humanitarian hub in the region.

The items will be airlifted from Accra and will be received by National Ebola Task Force in Liberia in order to distribute to several ETUs (Ebola Treatment Units) which continue to experience growing number of patients and are at full capacity. Lack of water and electricity are also main concern. The donation includes 500 jerry cans, 25 generators, 30 water pulifiers to be used in the hospitals and clinics in Montsserado, Lofa and Bong counties.

JICA , along with partners, will continue to support the Government of the Republic of Liberia's national response to fight against the spread of Ebola.
