Students of IIT-H attending the Academic Fair
Hyderabad, October 20, 2016: JICA today announced scholarships for the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H) students to study in internationally renowned universities of Japan during the 6th Edition of the Academic Fair, organized under the aegis of JICA-FRIENDSHIP project. These Scholarships will be offered to 30 graduating students of IITH to pursue masters or PHD and will cover tuition fees and logistics.
JICA-FRIENDSHIP project has been initiated by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), to facilitate development of a research network between institutes of higher education and industrial clusters in Japan with IITH that would lead to excellence in education and applied research in science and engineering. FRIENDSHIP connotes Future Researchers at IITH to Enhance Network Development with Scholarship of Japan. Under the project, scholarships are offered to graduating students of IITH to pursue PhD at internationally renowned universities in Japan, such as Tohoku University, University of Tokyo, Keio University, Waseda University, Nagoya University, Kyoto University, Ritsumeikan University, Osaka University and Kyushu University.
In the 6th Edition of the Academic Fair, The University of Tokyo, The University of Hokkaido, The University of Shizuoka and The University of Ritsumeikan along with Japanese Companies participated and shared insights on the various opportunities offered by JICA. H.E. The Ambassador of Japan to India Mr. Kenji Hiramatsu was Chief Guest for the event.
A tremendous progress under the JICA-FRIENDSHIP project was observed where 55 IITH graduates including 6 students of Masters and 46 PHD students were sent to japan in 9 universities. Among these students, one graduate joined Suzuki, one graduate joined Nisaan and the other joined DRI. 55 Japanese faculties also visited India for academic interaction in September 2016.
During the Academic Fair, faculty members from the Japanese universities shared with the students at IITH the scope for applied research and study, and the academia-industry linkages at the universities where such research is seamlessly applied for industrial development. Speakers at the Academic Fair included Prof.Hiroshi Esaki, Professor, Graduate School of Information Science and Technology and University of Tokyo, Dr. Katsutoshi Toda, Chairman & Managing Director, Toshiba Transmission and Distribution Systems (India) Pvt. Ltd.
"India and Japan are super special partners. JICA is absolutely keen to further enhance the current special relationship." said Mr. Sakamoto, Chief Representative of JICA India Office. "I am very pleased to offer unique opportunities to the friends of IIT Hyderabad to visit Japan and study in Japan. They must be able to find many interesting subjects, experiences and opportunities in Japan."
JICA is extending integrated support to IITH through ODA (Official Development Assistance). JICA's loan of JPY 23,035 million (approx. INR 1,336 crore) is facilitating development of the International Guest House, the Sports and Cultural Complex, the International Convention Centre, the Technology and Incubation Park, Knowledge Centre, and Research Centre Complex on the campus. Among other initiatives, JICA' support has been extended to joint research project such as Natural Disaster Mitigation and Recovery, and Smart City. Academic exchanges are also promoted to develop innovative technologies in response to the needs from the industrial sector.
Established as an independent administrative institution under the Government of Japan, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) aims to contribute to the promotion of international cooperation. JICA works as a bridge between Japan and emerging countries and provides assistance in forms of loan, grant and technical cooperation so that the emerging countries can strengthen their capabilities.
Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad, IITH, started academic programs in 2008 and offers Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral programs in Engineering & Environmental Sciences.
