Hyderabad, November 6, 2017: JICA recently announced scholarships for the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H) students to study in internationally renowned universities of Japan during the 6th Edition of the Academic Fair, organized under the aegis of the JICA-FRIENDSHIP Project. These Scholarships will be offered to 30 graduating students of IIT-H to pursue masters or Ph.D. and will cover tuition fees and living cost in Japan. The purpose of the fair is to introduce clear vision of study in Japan to IIT-H students including study environment, career, and life in Japan. Eight Japanese Universities introduced features and advantages of their respective institutes to IIT-H students during the fair.
The fair was attended by more than 240 student who received energetic and encouraging messages from Prof. U.B. Desai, Director IIT-H; Mr. Kenichi Ayukawa, MD & CEO of Maruti Suzuki India Limited; Prof. Toshiro Ohashi, Professor, Hokkaido University and Mr. Yoshiki Ehara, Representative of JICA India Office. Many Japanese Universities participated and shared insights on the various opportunities, among those were Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), Hiroshima University, Hokkaido University, Niigata University, Okayama University, Ritsumeikan University, Shizuoka University, University of Tokyo, Waseda University and Nagsasaki University. IIT-H students proactively visited Japanese Universities' information booths to seek their career in Japan.
Mr. Takema Sakamoto, Chief Representative of JICA India Office said "JICA's support to India is diversified to various areas to contribute economic and social development of the country. To enhance Academia-Academia and Academia-Industry network between Japan and India is one of the most important investments for both countries' long term friendship. This is the right time for young talent of India to come to Japan. The relationship between India and Japan are much stronger and closer than ever. This unique scholarship program is Japanese investment for next generation to play a key role for two countries future."
A tremendous progress under the JICA-FRIENDSHIP project, which has been supported by JICA, was observed where 74 IIT-H graduates including 14 students of Masters and 60 Ph.D. students were sent to Japan in 10 different universities since 2012. Among these students, several joined in famous Japanese companies and very famous and esteemed Universities and Research Institutes.
JICA is extending integrated support to IIT-H through ODA (Official Development Assistance) loan of 23,035 million Japanese yen (over INR 1,300 crore) for IIT-H campus development. JICA's support is facilitating development of International Guesthouse, Sports & Cultural Complex, Technology and Incubation Park, Convention Centre, Research Centre Complex, and Knowledge Centre, procurement of high-end laboratory equipment in IIT-H permanent campus. Other than that, JICA is also supporting joint research collaboration and academic exchanges with Japanese Universities and Research Institutes, as well as Japanese industries through JICA-FRIENDSHIP Project.

IIT-H students seeking career advices from Japanese universities
Established, by a specific law, as an independent administrative institution under the Government of Japan,the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) aims to contribute to the promotion of international cooperation, as a sole Japanese governmental agency in charge of ODA implementation. JICA is the world's largest bilateral donor agency. JICA works as a bridge between Japan and emerging countries, and provides assistance in forms of loan, grant and technical cooperation so that the emerging countries can strengthen their capabilities.
