Yogyakarta, 3rd October 2022, Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) conducted a launching ceremony of one of its new research programs "The Project for Strengthening Tropical Forest Resilience based on Management and Utilization of Genetic Resources Capable of Climate Change Adaptation". The launching ceremony was conducted at University of Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta.
SATREPS is a joint research program under the framework of technical cooperation involving various University Researchers, and Government Officials of Japanese and Indonesian institutions, funded by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Meanwhile, this research program's objective is to produce genetic materials with higher adaptability and productivity to climate change which is expected to benefit various stakeholders in the forestry sector in Indonesia.
During the launching ceremony, Okamura Kenji, Senior Representative of JICA Indonesia stated, "The Government of Indonesia has emphasized the importance of social forestry as a key industry to be promoted by local communities in the development agenda of the RPJMN 2020-2024. Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) also stated in their Strategic Plan for 2020-2024, he goals of "improving the economic potential of local communities through social forestry" and "climate change response" which aim to reduce GHG emissions and increase rural incomes through the social forestry. Our new SATREPS cooperation with UGM is in line with these Indonesian Government's policies. We also expect synergistic effects with the another JICA's Project "The Development of World Class University with Socio Entrepreneurial Spirit at University of Gadjah Mada" which targets on the development of human resources and the improvement of facilities of UGM".
